Our research

Our research aims to have a direct impact on understanding human health and wellbeing, including the changes in the brain that lead to disordered cognition and mental health.

Neuroscience in the real world

Neuroimaging has typically used highly artificial methods to understand human thinking and cognition, such as static images and words. However, understanding how humans behave in real world contexts requires methods and techniques that reflect naturalistic behaviour. At CUBIC, our vision is to integrate MRI methods with other techniques, such as virtual reality and dynamic movie stimuli, to form stronger links between laboratory work and real-world behaviour.

Decision making and choice

At Royal Holloway, we have recently established a new Neuroimaging Centre for Decision-Making & Choice, to be led by Professor Narender Ramnani. Decisions are at the core of every human activity, and understanding the ways in which people make decisions is becoming ever more important in the light of current global challenges encompassing climate, health, finance and politics.
